The last coffee

It wasn’t that long ago that I was completely broke. Last winter, I just finished my holiday shopping using a gift card someone accidentally gave me and the last few dollars from my paycheck. I made it, right on the razors edge, with five dollars to spare.

I took those five bucks, went to the nearest coffee shop and bought a peppermint mocha. It was the last thing I could afford until the next pay check (sorry rent). I stood by the water at Caesars Bay, put my bags down on a bench, and warmed my hands on the cup. I sipped the coffee between frosted winter breaths, and felt complete happiness. That night I would be eating canned tuna for dinner, but I did what I had to do, and had a wonderful cup of coffee to enjoy. Life was good.
