I tried this last year in Philadelphia.
My friend and I didn’t just want to be tourists in town, so we made a list of things that made each of us uncomfortable. We would pick one item from each of our lists, then flip a coin to see who suffers.
It sort of worked. I don’t know if a vacation is the best time play this game, but I did get to watch him suffer through half a dozen fried oysters.
The new year is here, and many of us are making lists and resolutions. It’s a good time to hit the refresh button, and do something different from what we’ve been doing.
So why not do something that makes us uncomfortable? Take a few days to scan through our thoughts and make a list of a dozen or so things that make us uncomfortable, then do one item a month for the rest of the year. A guaranteed pattern interruption every month of the year, a self-imposed stressor to help level up our spirit.
To inject a little chaos, attach a number to each item in the list, and roll some dice to decide what happens this month.
The list of categories can be broad or general, as vague as “have a hard conversation that I’ve been putting off” or specifics like “ice bath.”
Here’s to making 2019 the year that we gamble with discomfort.
