Why is the biggest car service company in the world (Uber) actually a Tech company? Same with the hospitality industry (Airbnb). Same reason tech mogul Elon Musk is competing with Google for the car industry. Why a small digital book seller (Amazon) became the biggest retailer in the world. Let’s not forget about how Apple disrupted Music and Netflix disrupted cable and video rental. It’s not a coincidence that the tech world is taking over the whole world.
The nerds are winning. And they share one critical trait – computational thinking.
Where old companies spend huge sums on launching products and hoping for luck to bring success, the tech giants have taken advantage of a different type of thought.
Computational thinkers work like this:
First they identify a clear problem. They then break it down into its simplest parts. They find patterns in the problem, and apply cold logic in finding a solution. This solution is then tested on the smallest scale possible, with no attachment to any single idea. Instead of bias, they let deep data decide which ideas are worth keeping.
This is why computer programming is probably the single-most advantageous skill to learn – because it reframes the mind to approach all of life’s problems with computational thought. Which, if Uber or Apple are any indication, will lead to success in any arena.
