A thought on Accountability

Last week, I wrote a series of short stories. The challenge was to write them as soon as I opened my eyes, based on  a word prompt generated the night before. The accountability of having to post on the blog got me to power through the 5 am groggyness and write. (it was HARD)

The morning after, I tried to continue the writing exercise, generated the word prompt, and… nothing. It wasn’t in me.

Accountability is a key to consistency. Consistency is a key to success. If you want success, you have to be consistent, if you want consistency, you have to find ways to hold yourself accountable.

That isn’t to say that you can advertise your ambitious goals to the world and call that accountability. In fact, you should probably not tell people your goals.

Telling everyone that you plan on losing 60 lbs in 2 months is not effective. If you truly want accountability with weight loss, give 600 dollars to a friend. Get a smart scale, and for every week that you don’t lose 6 lbs, they can deposit 10 bucks into their savings account (or donate it to an organization you hate).

So the next time I want to force myself to be accountable, money will be donated awful causes if I don’t.
